SPL Founder, Philip Jones first developed turbo yeasts and brought them to market over 20 years ago. Turbo Yeast is a range of fast fermenting yeasts combined with unique nutrition complexes for use in the production of alcoholic beverages.

They can be used to produce 96% potable alcohol, or can be used to create spirits, liqueurs or various flavoured alcoholic beverages (FABs) and have proved popular in creating products for the RTD category.

Active dried alcohol yeast combined with a complete nutrient complex, designed to ferment up to 14% ABV in 48 hours or up to 20% ABV in 4 to 5 days.

Product Description and Function

A vigorous active dried distillers yeast strain blended with complete macro and micro nutrition ideal for fermentation of any sugar based feedstock such as 95DE glucose sugar syrup, pure sucrose or other fermentable substrates such as molasses, thick sugar juice etc. TY48 can be used at different dosages according to the required application (see dosage and application information below).

TY48 contains only pure fully chemically defined ingredients and does not contain yeast extract or other non-chemically defined nutrients which can taint the quality of beverage alcohol. TY48 includes fermentation activators to ensure rapid start to fermentation this combined with the very low total bacteria count of less than 1 x 10⁴ CFU/gram greatly reduce the potential for bacterial spoilage.

Ethanol / Temperature tolerance:

  • 14% ABV—max liquid temp 38°C
  • 16% ABV—max liquid temp 35°C
  • 18% ABV—max liquid temp 33°C
  • 20% ABV—max liquid temp 27°C

Dosage and Application

Add TY48 directly into fermentation vessel providing vessel has mixing facility. If fermentation vessel has no mixing facility then add to 10 times its weight of warm water (30-40ºC), mix for 5 minutes then add into the substrate solution.
Application dosages for TY48 are as follows;

  • 8.0kg/1000L for fermentation to 14% ABV within 24hrs
  • 5.4kg/1000L for fermentation to 14% ABV within 48hrs
  • 5.4kg/1000L for fermentation to 20% ABV within 4 days

Optimum liquid fermentation temperatures;

  • Fermentation to 14% ABV—liquid temperatures should be 30-32°C
  • Fermentation to 20% ABV—liquid temperatures should be 25-27°C

TY48 will generate unexpected quantities of heat during fermentation. If the liquid temperature AT ANY TIME exceeds the temperatures given above within the technical characteristics then fermentation will stick. it is important that adequate cooling
system exists.

Active dried yeast and nutrient formulation optimised for super clean, reliable fermentation up to 15% ABV in refined sugar fermentation systems.

Product Description and Function

A super high-purity active yeast product developed with complete nutrition, optimised for fermentation of refined sugars to yield super clean, high purity alcohol base up to 15% ABV. Although designed specifically for use in refined sugar fermentation systems, TY00 can also be used with any fermentable sugar substrate to yield high quality alcohol.

Formulated with a chemically defined, urea-based nutrient complex, TY00 is intended to produce high purity alcohol base for use in flavoured alcoholic beverage applications including flavoured malt beverages, or for distillation as spirit alcohol. TY00 is based on a low congener strain which produces minimal fusel oils and esters, therefore minimising contribution to flavour and aroma of end product.

Optimum alcohol quality and reliable fermentation performance are ensured through use of a specially selected yeast strain combined with a complete macro and micro nutrient complex, providing all essential nutrient elements required for stress-free fermentation.

Dosage and Application

For use with refined sugars including sucrose, glucose, invert syrup, or high fructose corn syrup. Can also be used with any fermentable (i.e. enzymatically converted) starch substrate, including wheat, grains, potato etc.

Pitch TY00 at a rate of 2.4 g/l directly into fermentation vessel, providing vessel has mixing facility. If fermentation vessel has no mixing facility, add to 10 times weight of 30-40ºC water and mix for 5 minutes before pitching. TY00 is not suitable for propagation or post-fermentation recovery for re-use.

TY00 can tolerate a wide fermentation temperatures range of 10-30ºC, but for optimum performance and quality is it recommended to ferment at 15-25ºC. At lower temperatures, alcohol quality will be superior but fermentation will take longer.

Based on recommended pitch rate, complete fermentation is expected in around 6-8 days at 20-25ºC. If necessary, pitch rate can be optimised through trials to suit the particular requirements of the application or user.

Extremely vigorous distillers’ yeast and nutrition blend with fermentation activators to ensure a rapid start and trouble free fermentation, achieving 14% ABV in 24 hours.

TY24 Turbo Yeast is designed to ferment pure sucrose up to 14% ABV in 24hrs at 30-32°C liquid fermentation temperature, but can also be used to ferment a range of other fermentable feed stocks in ultra-fast time. TY24 provides 100% of fermentation nutritional requirements ensuring reliable, trouble free fermentations. TY24 contains only pure fully chemically defined ingredients and does not contain yeast extract or other non-chemically defined nutrients which can taint the quality of beverage alcohol.

TY24 includes fermentation activators to ensure rapid start to fermentation, this combined with the very low total bacteria count of less than 5 x 10⁴ CFU/gram greatly reduce the potential for bacterial spoilage.

Dosage and Application

For use with any fermentable substrate mash derived from corn, wheat, barley, rye, or pure sugar substrate materials. Can also be used with molasses to achieve up to 12% v.v. ethanol.

Add TY24 Turbo Yeast at a dose rate of 8.2kg/1000L direct into fermentation vessel providing vessel has mixing facility. If fermen-tation vessel has no mixing facility then add TY24 to 10 times its weight of warm water (30-40ºC), mix for 5 minutes then add into the substrate solution.

This product will generate significant quantities of heat during fermentation – it is important that sufficient cooling systems are installed on the fermenter if using this product — liquid fermentation temperatures should be checked to verify do not exceed tolerance limitations (see Technical Characteristics).

Turbo Yeast based on active dried wine yeast for use with fruit or sugar fermentation systems.

Product Description and Function

A high ethanol tolerant active dried wine yeast blended with complete macro and micro nutrient complex ideal for fermentation of fruit or any fermentable sugar-based feedstock. TY-FR1 is especially recommended wherever rapid and high alcohol fermentation of fruit-based substrate is required, but can also be used to ferment pure sugar substrates.

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae wine strain in this Turbo Yeast is ethanol tolerant up to 18% ABV and capable of fermenting between 10—35°C liquid temperature (note: ethanol tolerance is significantly reduced above 26°C). This strain is also tolerant to difficult fermentation conditions, has high SO2 tolerance, produces low volatile acidity and is low foaming.

SPL TY-FR1 contains only pure, chemically-defined ingredients and does not contain yeast extract or other non-chemically defined nutrients which can taint alcohol quality. TY-FR1 includes fermentation activators to ensure rapid start to fermentation; combined with low bacterial count < 5 x 10⁴ cfu/gram this greatly reduces potential for bacterial spoilage.

Dosage and Application

Add TY-FR1 directly into fermentation vessel providing vessel has mixing facility. If fermentation vessel has no mixing facility then add to 10 times its weight of warm water (30-35ºC), mix for 5 minutes then add into the substrate solution.

Application dosages depend upon fruit content, alcohol level and fermentation rate required. For high-fruit content a dosage of 2.3kg/1000 litre is recommended. For use with pure sugar or low-fruit content, a dosage of up to 4.6kg/1000 litre is recommended. These dosages allow fermentation up to 18% ABV or above and can be reduced if lower alcohol levels are required.

Optimum liquid fermentation temperature is 18—24°C unless cold fermenting is required for flavour/aroma development. To avoid extended lag times and risk of bacterial infection, ensure fermentation temperature is above 20°C for the first 24hrs.

A high yield, temperature tolerant, distiller’s yeast strain that can ferment up to 14% ABV at 38°C liquid temperature, but also reach up to 18% ABV at cooler temperatures.

TT Turbo Yeast’s advantage is in providing 100% of fermentation nutritional requirements, ensuring reliable trouble free fermentations time after time up to 15% v.v. ethanol within 72 hours with exceptional yield . TT is the only fermentation system to contain only pure fully chemically defined ingredients and does not containing yeast extract or blood by-products which can taint the quality of beverage alcohol.

TT Turbo Yeast includes fermentation activators to ensure rapid start to fermentation, this combined with the very low total bacteria count of less than 5 x 10⁴ cfu/gram greatly reduce the potential for bacterial spoilage.

The distillers yeast strain selected for TT Turbo Yeast produces an optimum congener profile for potable and beverage alcohol, promoting a natural smoothness, round mouth-feel and balanced profile.

TT Turbo Yeast will withstand extreme stress factors such as ethanol, temperature, organic acids and osmotic pressure ensuring reliability of fermentation even under variables process conditions.

For use with any fermentable substrate mash derived from corn, wheat, barley, rye, or pure sugar substrate materials. Can also be used with molasses to achieve up to 12% v.v. ethanol.

TT Turbo Yeast can be added directly into the fermentation vessel providing vessel has mixing facility. Where not possible to introduce directly, add TT Turbo Yeast into ten times its weight of water previously adjusted to between 30 – 400°C. Mix using high speed impeller for 5 minutes then pump into fermentation vessel.

The required dosage rate will depend upon the fermentation rate and alcoholic strength desired. Dose rate is 3.6g/L (3.6kg/1000L) to achieve up to 15% v/v in typically 2-3 days at 30-32°C liquid fermentation temperature. To achieve 18% v/v the dosage should be increased to 6.0g/L and will extend fermentation time to approx. 4 days.
